Samuel Wilks, 'Philosophical Pathology'

Leslie Ward · Leslie Ward ('Spy'), chromolithograph, Vanity Fair, 1 October 1892

Samuel Wilks, 'Philosophical Pathology'
Ward's plate presents the eminent physician and pathologist Samuel Wilks as a prosperous, slightly portly Victorian gentleman—white-haired, white-bearded, dressed in a long dark frock coat, striped trousers, and bow tie, holding a pince-nez with easy authority. The caricature exaggerates his bulk and the patrician tilt of his gaze without cruelty; this is Spy operating in admiration rather than mockery. Wilks, a Fellow of the Royal Society and leading figure at Guy's Hospital, coined the term 'Hodgkin's disease' and championed empirical over speculative medicine—hence the caption 'Philosophical Pathology,' a wry but respectful nod to his reputation for rigorous, unhurried clinical reasoning over fashionable theory.
