Richard Airey, Adjutant-General of the Forces

Richard Airey, Adjutant-General of the Forces
Spy's chromolithograph presents General Sir Richard Airey full-length, leaning on a walking cane, dressed in a dark frock coat, light trousers, and a towering black top hat — the uniform of Victorian establishment authority rendered with gentle mockery. His large white moustache and florid complexion are exaggerated in the caricaturist's manner, emphasising age and bluster. The plate caption, 'Adjutant-General of the Forces,' is pointed: Airey was still publicly associated with the logistical catastrophe of the Crimean War, having served as Quartermaster-General during the disastrous winter of 1854–55. The image reads as a wry commentary on institutional longevity — a man who survived scandal to reach the army's highest administrative office.
