'Bow Street' — Mr James Vaughan

'Bow Street' — Mr James Vaughan
Leslie Ward ('Spy') portrays James Vaughan, the presiding magistrate at Bow Street Police Court — London's most prominent magistracy — seated in an imposing high-backed chair with his fingertips pressed together in the classic judicial pose of patient deliberation. The caption 'Bow Street' identifies the institution rather than the man, a Vanity Fair habit that frames individuals as embodiments of public office. Vaughan appears corpulent, bald, and heavy-jowled, his bulk filling the chair; Ward exaggerates these features in the collegial tradition of Victorian caricature, where physical amplitude in a magistrate read as worldly solidity rather than moral failing. No ethnic caricature is present. The plate flatters professional gravity while gently mocking the self-important composure of a man accustomed to holding others in judgment.
