'a Traveller' — Lord Lamington
Leslie Ward · Leslie Ward ('Spy'), Vanity Fair, 20 August 1892. Chromolithograph. Yale Center for British Art, B1979.14.211.

Spy's full-length plate presents Lord Lamington — Scottish nobleman, future Governor of Bombay — in immaculate evening dress: dark tailcoat, white waistcoat, white bow-tie, and a top hat carried loosely at his side. One hand rests on his hip in an attitude of relaxed authority. The caption 'a Traveller' gestures at the aristocratic Grand Tour tradition rather than professional exploration. The caricature is mild by Spy's standards: a slightly elongated figure and a prominent reddish moustache supply the comic distance. The plate belongs to the magazine's steady project of depicting its subjects as men of the world.
