'Fairford Abbey' — Edwin Austin Abbey
Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 29 December 1898

Leslie Ward ('Spy') caricatures Edwin Austin Abbey, the American-born painter and illustrator who had settled in England and was, by 1898, at the height of his reputation — he would go on to paint Edward VII's coronation. Ward renders him as the working artist-gentleman: tweed jacket over a matching waistcoat, knickerbockers, and dark stockings, one hand in his pocket, the other cradling a painter's palette with brushes and a rag. The caption 'Fairford Abbey' puns on his name against the Gloucestershire church whose medieval glass he was then studying. The chromolithograph's signature 'Spy' appears lower right, the publication title upper left.
