John W. M. Ramsay ('Liverpool') — Men of the Day No. 218
Leslie Ward · 28 February 1880

Leslie Ward ('Spy') renders Lord Ramsay, Royal Navy commander and heir to the Earl of Liverpool, in the characteristic Vanity Fair formula: a side-profile caricature that exaggerates the sitter's most legible features while keeping the body in relaxed three-quarter stance. Ramsay appears in a dark frock coat, hands thrust into trouser pockets, his blond hair swept back and his prominent nose amplified well beyond portraiture. The caption 'Liverpool' announces his dynastic identity rather than his naval rank — standard Vanity Fair shorthand for aristocratic succession. The treatment is typical Victorian class comedy, gently mocking inherited consequence rather than earned distinction.
