Humphrey Napier Sturt, 'East Dorsetshire'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 7 May 1892

Humphrey Napier Sturt, 'East Dorsetshire'
Leslie Ward ('Spy') renders the Hon. Humphrey Napier Sturt, Conservative MP for East Dorsetshire, in crisp profile facing left — the classic Vanity Fair pose that flattens personality into silhouette. Sturt wears the full uniform of Tory respectability: black morning coat, bold chalk-stripe trousers, gold watch-chain, top hat, and a purple buttonhole. The caption 'East Dorsetshire' identifies him by constituency rather than name, the magazine's habitual shorthand for landed political interest. Ward slightly exaggerates the subject's fair colouring and prosperous girth — gentle mockery of the comfortable country-seat MP, wealthy, uncontroversial, representing the agricultural interest that still dominated late-Victorian Conservative benches. No ethnic caricature is present; the satire is purely one of class comfort.
