Herbert Henry Asquith, Q.C., M.P. — 'East Fife'

Leslie Ward · 1 August 1891

Herbert Henry Asquith, Q.C., M.P. — 'East Fife'
Spy (Leslie Ward) renders the future Prime Minister as a lean, angular figure mid-stride, top hat planted squarely on a narrow head, a rolled document tucked under one arm — the visual shorthand of the industrious barrister-politician. The caption 'East Fife' identifies his Scottish constituency rather than his name, assuming readers already knew him. Asquith had just distinguished himself as Home Secretary under Gladstone; Ward's caricature exaggerates his sharp, jutting profile and slight frame. The silhouette flatters ambition: a man going somewhere, papers in hand, eyes forward. Within two decades he would be Liberal Prime Minister and architect of the Parliament Act of 1911.
