Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey — 'A Privileged Person'

Carlo Pellegrini's chromolithograph — plate 368, *Statesmen* No. 14 — presents the 3rd Earl Grey in severe profile, stooped forward in a long black frock coat and grey trousers, a tall silk hat exaggerating his forward lean. A coronet floats in the upper-right corner, signalling rank before a word is read. The caption, *'A privileged person,'* is the whole argument: Grey was a Whig grandee whose Colonial Secretary tenure (1846–52) made him architect of responsible government across the Empire yet also a defender of aristocratic prerogative at home. Pellegrini renders him as ancient, bird-boned, and slightly simian — a caricature convention of the era applied freely to patrician subjects — conveying obsolescence more than menace: a titled relic still clutching his walking stick.
