Henry Ernest Searle, 'Professional Champion Sculler of the World'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 7 September 1889

Henry Ernest Searle, 'Professional Champion Sculler of the World'
Leslie Ward ('Spy') depicts the Australian sculling champion Henry Searle in profile, striding confidently in a dark double-breasted jacket, brown trousers, and bowler hat, swinging a cane — the leisured gentleman-athlete pose Vanity Fair habitually awarded its sporting heroes. The caption labels him 'Professional Champion Sculler of the World,' acknowledging his 1888 Thames title won against Edward Hanlan. The caricature's exaggerations are mild: an elongated neck, jutting chin, and reddish-blond colouring suggesting youth and vigour. Searle is depicted in the costume and bearing of a middle-class Englishman, a year before his death at twenty-three.
