Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 'The Man Who Won't Stop'
Carlo Pellegrini · Vanity Fair, 18 April 1874

Carlo Pellegrini ('Ape') caricatures Sir Garnet Wolseley — Britain's most celebrated active general in 1874, fresh from his swift, clinically executed Ashanti campaign in West Africa — as a strutting imperial adventurer. The figure wears a khaki field uniform, pith helmet wound with a red puggaree, riding boots, and carries both a swagger cane and a sheathed sword. The head is enlarged in classic caricature fashion, the mustache immaculate, the expression coolly self-satisfied. Pellegrini's caption, 'The man who won't stop,' is double-edged admiration and mild mockery: Wolseley's relentless ambition and his habit of prosecuting colonial wars with unseemly speed unsettled the Horse Guards establishment.
