Gabriel Goldney, MP — 'Practical'
Melchiorre Delfico · Vanity Fair, 28 December 1872

Plate No. 217 in Vanity Fair's long-running Statesmen series, this chromolithograph by Melchiorre Delfico caricatures Gabriel Goldney, Conservative MP for Chippenham. The figure is rendered in the magazine's characteristic full-length profile: an oversized, slightly jowled head atop a compact body dressed in a dark frock-coat, buttoned waistcoat, and pale trousers. Mutton-chop whiskers and a receding crown read immediately as the respectable provincial squire-politician. The caption 'Practical' is gently sardonic — Goldney was a competent but undistinguished backbencher, and the word damns with faint praise, suggesting solid reliability over brilliance. The caricature works through social type, marking its subject as the archetypal steady, unimaginative Tory gentleman of the early Gladstone era.
