From the exhibition
Edric Frederick Gifford, 3rd Baron Gifford, V.C.
Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 17 January 1880

Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents Lord Gifford in three-quarter profile, arms folded, wearing a long frock coat with a yellow-gloved hand tucked beneath one arm — the studied nonchalance of a decorated soldier at ease in civilian clothes. The caption reads simply 'V.C.', the Victoria Cross being Gifford's entire credential here: he won it aged nineteen during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War (1874), leading a scouting party deep into the Gold Coast forest. Ward's caricature exaggerates his long nose and receding chin into a sharp, aristocratic silhouette.
