'Davie' — David Jardine Jardine

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair supplement, 22 April 1908. Chromolithograph by Leslie Ward ('Spy').

'Davie' — David Jardine Jardine
Ward's plate nicknames this Scottish landowner and Lockerbie notable simply 'Davie', the diminutive used familiarly. The full caption below reads *David Jardine Jardine*. The figure is rendered in impeccable race-day dress: black frock coat, pinstripe trousers, white gloves, top hat, and a leather field-glass strap crossing his chest — the complete uniform of the prosperous British sporting gentleman circa 1908. A cane dangles from one hand. Ward's caricature is restrained; the rosy, mustachioed face carries a mild self-satisfaction. The joke, such as it is, is purely social: a well-heeled Scot dressed with correctness, binoculars ready, entirely at home on the turf.
