Charles Sydney Goldmann
Leslie Ward · Published 28 January 1904; chromolithograph by Leslie Ward ('Spy')

Spy's plate shows Goldmann in jodhpurs, riding boots, and a double-breasted Norfolk jacket, holding a large box camera at waist height — the emblem of his career as a journalist-photographer covering southern Africa. The caption reads *'a self-made African.'* Goldmann was a Johannesburg financier and correspondent who made his fortune in the Rand goldfields. The caricature's technique is typical Ward: the head mildly enlarged, the body trim and competent-looking rather than mocked.
