The caption quotes his notorious 1906 maiden speech in the Commons — *'Moab is my Washpot'* (Psalm 108:9), a taunt implying the Liberal benches were fit only for contempt — which electrified Westminster and made his reputation overnight. Ward's caricature sharpens Smith's angular jaw and elongated limbs into the image of a man already performing supreme self-confidence.
