This August 1926 issue of *Weird Tales* features A. Merritt's serial "The Woman of the Wood," in which war veteran McKay, recuperating in a lake resort in the Vosges mountains, develops a mystical attunement to the forest surrounding him. He becomes aware of a conflict between the encroaching woodland and an old hunting lodge occupied by the Polleau family, who wage continuous war against the trees through cutting and burning. McKay senses the forest as a conscious, patient military force watching the lodge with inexorable purpose. Other contents include H.P. Lovecraft's "The Terrible Old Man," Edmond Hamilton's "The Monster-God of Mamurth," Seabury Quinn's supernatural tale "Ancient Fires," and Greye La Spina's serial "Fettered." The issue reprints Guy de Maupassant's "The Horla" and includes work by Derleth, Howard, and others across genres of horror, weird fantasy, and pseudo-scientific romance.
