The Saint Detective Magazine
· July 1958

This July 1958 issue of The Saint Detective Magazine features five mystery and detective stories. The lead novelette, "Raffles and the Angry Banker" by Barry Perowne, opens with Raffles playing polo in Gibraltar and Campamento, Spain, where he observes Bartholomew Finlay, a wealthy sherry bodega owner in a wheelchair. Raffles explains to his companion Bunny that Finlay adopted two boys—Roberto from Spain and Alex from Gibraltar—and sponsored an annual horse race called the Sherry Bowl Derby in memory of his deceased wife. The narrative appears to involve a significant stakes race with implications for control of Finlay's business interests. Other featured stories include Leslie Charteris's "The Unblemished Bootlegger" and "The Blue Scarab" by R. Austin Freeman about scientific detective John Thorndyke, alongside tales by Wenzell Brown, Frank Kiefer, Melville Davisson Post, and Cornell Woolrich.
