"A Victoria Cross Incident" describes the British loss of two batteries at Colenso (December 15, 1899), where Colonel Long's artillery, inadequately supported, faced hidden Boer riflemen and entrenched troops along the Tugela River. After an hour-long engagement, British officers Captain Congreve, Lieutenant F. H. S. Roberts (Lord Roberts' son), Corporal Nurse, and Captain H. L. Reed volunteered rescue attempts, all sustaining wounds. Roberts died of his injuries; all four were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross—described as the only such bestowal yet reported in the African war.
