The Argosy, Vol. 55
· February 1893

This issue of *The Argosy* (February 1893) features the serial novel "The Engagement of Susan Chase" by Mrs. Henry Wood, author of *East Lynne*. In chapters III and IV, Susan Chase decides to travel to Barbados to support her sister Emma (now Mrs. Carnagie) during an impending illness, despite her sister having married Susan's former fiancé, Mr. Charles Carnagie. Ursula Chase, their sister, opposes the journey as unpleasant and impractical. Susan departs for Barbados, arriving in late April. At the port, Captain Chard meets her on behalf of Mr. Carnagie, who remains absent. The narrative explores themes of Christian forgiveness and sisterly duty within a domestic drama set partly in colonial Barbados, depicting marital strain between the Carnagie couple while establishing the circumstances of Susan's visit.
