This issue features *Rubies*, a complete novel by L. Adams Beck about an English farmer from Cornwall drawn into adventure in Burma. The protagonist, Roger Pendarvis, discovers a connection between Burmese jewels and a dark family secret after witnessing a suspicious midnight exchange between a local smuggler and a prominent magistrate.
The issue also includes several short stories: "Lightning and Black Blunder" by Howard R. Marsh (cowboys and racehorses); "The Second Battle of Shiloh" by Roy W. Hinds (prize-fighting); "What the Cards Knew" by Charles R. Barnes (Christmas); "Peter Burnham, Journalist" by Ralph D. Paine (a Yale pitcher entering journalism); "Out of the Meshes" by J. H. Greene (maritime redemption); and "Charity and the Canary" by Galvin Johnston (a sheriff's misadventure). Charles Neville Buck continues his serial *Sandollar*, an account of racing world intrigue.
