The Popular Magazine, Vol. 43, No. 1
This issue of Popular Magazine, dated December 20, 1916, contains ten fiction pieces. The lead story is J. Frank Davis's complete novel "A Fourfold Game," about secret agents maneuvering in Mexico with diplomatic consequences across global powers. Henry Herbert Knibbs contributes "Bonita," a short story featuring the character Overland Red in a Christmas episode. H. C. Witwer's "It's Bad Luck" depicts superstition in boxing. Roy Norton continues his four-part serial "The Phantom U-Boat," a narrative of modern piracy via submarine. Other stories include Bertrand W. Sinclair's "One Christmas," about a wealthy man tempted to steal for love; Robert Welles Ritchie's "Virus X," featuring crime investigators the "Incomparables" solving a case involving bacilli; Arthur Stringer's philosophical "The Bell," posing what occurs when the last human hears a doorbell ring; and Dane Coolidge's "Rimrock Jones" (part IV of five). Verse by Berton Braley and Henry de Vere Stacpoole's serial "Sea Plunder" round out the contents.
