"Rogues Rampant" by Howard Fitzalan This serial story, opening in *The Popular Magazine* (August 1909), begins in Washington, D.C. Redmayne, a wealthy young man of independent means, accidentally overhears crossed telephone wires revealing a tense conversation between two people discussing a dangerous conspiracy—a woman pleading not to sever ties with dangerous individuals, a man insisting she do so. Through the telephone exchange, Redmayne identifies one party as Miss Bianca Carnotti of I Street. At the Mallinfleur Mansion reception, Redmayne encounters Miss Anne Chilton Carr, whom he had previously noticed in a fur shop and sought to meet. She attends with Caspar von Zuehohn, a diplomat. Redmayne is introduced to Miss Bianca Carnotti, the mysterious woman from the telephone call, whose guarded reaction upon meeting him suggests she recognizes something in him. The narrative establishes an intricate plot involving hidden danger, romantic interest, and mysterious conspirators.
