Work and Win No. 50
Fred Fearnot's Great Mystery This issue contains the opening of a serial adventure story by Hal Standish featuring Fred Fearnot and his companions Terry Olcott and Dick Duncan vacationing by bicycle near Avon Academy. The narrative introduces the boys' plan to tour westward toward Niagara Falls while staying as guests of Professor Lambert. The chapter primarily comprises a comedic sequence where Fred, using ventriloquism, tricks a farmer and the household staff by making peeping sounds from a basket of fresh eggs, convincing them the eggs contain hatching chicks. The prank unfolds across multiple scenes—first at the wagon, then in the kitchen—as Fred manipulates servants Black Pete and the cook Cynthia into believing the eggs are supernatural or actively incubating. Eunice Lambert, the professor's dignified daughter, becomes Fred's confederate in the joke. The story combines juvenile humor with romantic undertones as Fred grows more familiar with Eunice throughout the episode.
