Work and Win: Fred Fearnot and the Girl in White
This October 6, 1905 issue of *Work and Win* features "Fred Fearnot and the Girl in White: Or, The Mystery of the Steamboat" by Hal Standish. The adventure serial opens with Fred Fearnot and Terry Olcott returning to their ranch after successfully exposing a wealthy ranchman named Ringgold in court; two honest cowboys who testified against him face potential retaliation. When suspicious strangers appear on the property seeking to murder these cowboys for a hundred-dollar bounty, Fred disguises himself as a detective. He infiltrates the conspirators, poses as a willing hitman, and arranges to provide them a rifle. At the climax, the cowboys stage a false ambush using the rifle to feign shooting victims; when the would-be assassins attempt their escape, Terry and the old miner Gunter intercept and capture them. The narrative emphasizes frontier justice, loyalty among ranch hands, and Fred's resourcefulness in thwarting the murderous plot.
