Work and Win, No. 160

This issue of *Fred Fearnot* (No. 160, December 27, 1901) is a dime novel weekly containing serialized adventure fiction plus instructional how-to content. The lead story, "The Judge's Mistake" by Hal Standish, concerns Fred Fearnot and Terry Olcott discussing their situation with the villain Hunter, now institutionalized after poisoning valuable horses. A secondary plot involves conflict between local millworkers whose sons attacked Jimmie Ray; Mose, a Black associate, held one boy while Ray fought the other. The fathers were fined in court, but spread false accusations against Mose on the street. Dick Duncan intervenes, confronting two men spreading falsehoods and defending both Miss Olcott's courtroom testimony and Mose's character against racial prejudice. The remainder consists of advertisements for instructional booklets covering hunting, magic tricks, athletics, mechanical trades, musical instruments, letter-writing, and fortune-telling by palmistry.
