Catalog Note
This Half-Dime Library issue features two works. A catalog index lists numerous installments in the Deadwood Dick, Jr. series by Edward L. Wheeler, spanning titles from "The Crescent Sign" through "The Big Four," covering western adventures across American locations and mining camps, often involving crime and pursuits.
The primary serialized story is "Jumbo Joe's Disguise" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. Set in Arizona, eighteen-year-old Joe Star ("Jumbo Joe") travels the prairie to meet Hezekiah Blum, a former minister turned miser living in a secluded log cabin. Blum hires Joe to transport ten thousand dollars to Wolfville within five days, paying two hundred dollars for the task. Joe signs a contract wagering his life on successful delivery. Blum's beautiful young daughter appears sympathetic to Joe. Blum warns that a gang led by someone named Bloker seeks to intercept and rob the money, and declares his daughter will accompany Joe to ensure he completes the mission faithfully.
