Deadwood Dick Library No. 32
This issue of the *Dick Turpin Library* anthology presents numbered installments (titles listed 108–128) featuring the historical highwayman character in adventure stories. The featured serial, "Deadwood Dick at Secret City," introduces an entirely different protagonist despite the publication's banner title. The narrative opens in the mining settlement of Big Bonanza on a Sunday morning. A mysterious stranger arrives by stagecoach and attends services with Reverend Cinnamon Charley. Armed masked men led by a figure in black interrupt the sermon, demanding Frank Foster surrender. The leader reveals himself as Deadwood Dick (Ned Harris), an outlaw pursuing Foster for betraying gang members to Judge Lynch for two hundred dollars, resulting in ten men's executions. Deadwood Dick proposes Foster walk a two-inch wire cable across a three-hundred-foot abyss without balance-pole or use of hands. The outcome is determined by a dice game. Foster throws two pair; Deadwood Dick throws five aces and wins. Foster must now attempt the cable crossing, with success granting his freedom.
