Thuvia, Maid of Mars

Thuvia, Maid of Mars Edgar Rice Burroughs' *Thuvia, Maid of Mars*, published October 1920 by A. C. McClurg & Co., is an illustrated science fiction novel set in the Martian world of Barsoom. The story opens in the royal gardens of Thuvan Dihn's palace at Ptarth, where Thuvia, the jeddak's daughter, rejects the violent advances of Astok, Prince of Dusar. Carthoris of Helium—son of John Carter, the Warlord of Mars—intervenes and defeats Astok in combat. Thuvia later reveals to Carthoris that she is promised to Kulan Tith, Jeddak of Kaol, thereby rejecting Carthoris' declared love. The narrative involves political intrigue between Martian nations, romantic conflict, and adventure typical of Burroughs' Martian fiction. The book includes fourteen chapters covering themes of honor, warfare, alien races, and interplanetary political relationships, with illustrations by J. Allen St. John.
