*Los Espiritistas de Modern City* by Ralph Barby is a crime thriller set in the town of Modern City. The narrative follows a murder investigation after librarian Nathaly Sapinsky is found dead at Grass Plat, a secluded spot frequented by couples. Jimmy, a thirty-year-old man with intellectual disabilities who wears an orthopedic boot, discovers the body while engaging in voyeuristic behavior. Disturbed by the corpse, he flees in panic. Police Commissioner Bob Perkins, investigating the case with his deputy Percy, finds Jimmy's toy—a plastic game with steel balls—at the crime scene. Despite circumstantial evidence, Perkins arrests Jimmy, believing him the perpetrator. The narrative also introduces Perkins's family life, including his wife Martha's involvement with Reverend Mother Castle's spiritualist meetings, and his sons Hal and Danny. The story concludes with Perkins attending a rugby match featuring his son Danny.
