The Squaw Spy
The Squaw Spy; Or, The Rangers of the Lava-Beds By Captain Charles Howard This frontier narrative centers on the 1873 Modoc War. General Gillem commands military forces against Chief Captain Jack (Mousel) following the massacre of soldiers including Captains Thomas, Howe, and Wright at the lava-bed stronghold. Artena, a Modoc woman spy, reports to Gillem and scout Kit South about enemy movements and positions. She reveals that young captives from Lost River—including Kit's daughter 'Reesa—are held in Jack's camp; Reesa's mother was killed by raiders led by Baltimore Bob. Kit and Artena plan to kidnap Captain Jack, though Kit vows afterward to rescue his daughter and kill Baltimore Bob. In Jack's cave stronghold, the chief wears General Canby's uniform and sword. Young warriors like Shack Nasty Tom and Boston Charley celebrate their victory with scalps. When 'Reesa erupts from the cave, declaring her father cannot be harmed, Boston Charley attacks her until Jack intervenes, claiming Baltimore Bob holds prior claim to the girl.
