The Texas Tiger
The Texan Tiger: The Border Vendetta This serial novel by Edward Willett, from Beadle and Adams's Pocket Series, concerns a mysterious young gentleman stranger who rides into the rough Texas settlement of Redwood. When local gambler Lee Crozier bets he can produce a horse to race against Joe Jaypert's undefeated gray mustang, Crozier seizes the stranger's superior brown mare without permission. The stranger initially refuses, armed confrontation looms, but the intervention of Kate, Crozier's cousin, persuades him to allow the race. Kate's personal interest in defeating Jaypert's horse—she lost twenty dollars wagering on a previous race—sways the stranger's decision. The narrative depicts frontier racing culture, wagering disputes, and the stranger's courteous but resolute character establishing him as the story's protagonist.
