Island Jim; or, The Pet of the Family
Beadle's Pocket Library No. 75 presents "Island Jim," a serialized adventure billed as "A Strange Story of a Haunted Boy and a Phantom Father." The wood-engraved cover depicts a dramatic seaside tableau: a man in dark coat and hat gestures over a rope-bound figure emerging from water, while dogs gather at the shore near wooden beams and a distant house. Published at five cents, Beadle's Pocket Library represented the affordable fiction that dominated American newsstands in the 1880s—pocket-sized weeklies featuring adventure narratives, ghost stories, and sensational plots that established narrative conventions later inherited by pulp magazines and comic books. The stark engraving style and melodramatic typography signal the working-class readership these publications courted through visual spectacle and serialized storytelling.
