Museum Catalog Note *Old Zip's Cabin: A Greenhorn in the Woods* by Captain J. F. C. Adams opens with Percy Fitzsimmons, a fastidiously dressed Philadelphian visiting his uncle Hugh Fullerton in Minnesota during the 1862 Sioux uprising. Left behind when his cousin Helena travels away, Percy borrows his uncle's rifle for sport, determined to impress Philadelphia society with an Indian scalp. In the forest, he twice shoots at what he believes is a Native American sitting on a log—only to discover it is Zip Smith, a weathered frontier hunter. The bullets miss entirely. Zip warns of imminent Sioux danger and urges Percy to leave the isolated territory. Undeterred and dismissive of Zip's advice, Percy continues hunting and accidentally shoots his uncle's cow, which he mistakes for a grizzly bear. The story continues in subsequent installments.
