Beadle's Pocket Library, Vol. IV, No. 41

This installment of *Deadwood Dick's Eagles* by Edward L. Wheeler appears in the weekly *Beadle and Adams* dime novel series (Vol. IV, No. 98, 1884). The story introduces five miners at Flood Bar in the Black Hills—James Belmont, Old Buzzard, the silent Squirrel Sam, pious Hooper Vandegrift, and dwarf Miaco Rullon—who discover gold in a remote location. During a torrential rainstorm, a mysterious horseman (Flying Floyd, identified as Deadwood Dick's lieutenant) passes through, then the miners learn that Gray Wolf's Native American "Vagabonds" occupy the bluffs, cutting off escape. A burst dam upstream forces them to take refuge in linden trees with their supplies. The narrative then shifts to a valley settlement where colonist Cyril Waltonby has built a comfortable home, visited by a bearded stranger inquiring after Waltonby and concerned about maintaining a disguise.
