Beadle's Dime Library No. 961: Captain Cowl, The White Hood Chief

A mounted figure in Western garb confronts two men on foot in this wood-engraved cover for Joseph E. Badger Jr.'s serial adventure. The composition—armed protagonist dominates the frame—signals the dime novel's core appeal: action, frontier justice, and masculine prowess sold for ten cents. Beadle's Dime Library, which launched in 1860, flooded America with serialized tales of outlaws, detectives, and adventurers, establishing visual and narrative formulas that pulp magazines and comic books would inherit. The bold typography and dramatic engraving announce genre conventions: quick stakes, clear heroes and villains, and plots driven by gunplay and pursuit. These ephemeral weeklies created the visual grammar of popular adventure fiction.
