Museum Catalog Note
This issue of *Beadle and Adams'* dime novel series (No. 637, January 7, 1891) contains the opening installment of "Joe Phenix in Crazy Camp; or, The Great Detectives Long Chase," a Western romance set in Arizona by Albert W. Aiken. The narrative follows John Randolph, a dark-complexioned, half-Indian horseman traveling toward Crazy Camp in the Little Colorado region. He encounters Kangaroo Tom, an eccentric toll-collector at a remote canyon outpost—a gaunt, peculiarly-dressed man who demands payment and challenges travelers to wrestling matches. Randolph accepts Tom's challenge, soundly defeats him in a wrestling bout, and continues onward. The story emphasizes frontier dialect, physical comedy, and adventure elements typical of Western dime fiction of the period.
