Beadle's New York Dime Library, No. 455

This Beadle & Adams weekly (No. 455, July 13, 1897) features "Yank Yellowbird; or, The Conspirators of Medicine Springs" by William H. Manning, author of Western serials including "Wild West Walt" and "Colorado Rube." The story follows convict-hunters Abel Gault, Chickering, and Wing pursuing escaped prisoner Philip Templeton and his daughter toward Medicine Springs, a health resort where mineral springs are used as a curative treatment. Their guide is Yank Yellowbird, a homely but seasoned Western scout. When Yellowbird learns they're hunting an old man and his daughter, he feigns severe neuralgia—claiming it's contagious and fatal—and abandons the posse, allowing them to proceed alone. Yellowbird secretly redirects his horse away to avoid participating in hunting a woman. The narrative also introduces two other riders: an elderly, intelligent-faced gentleman and a young brunette woman, both appearing anxious and weary, traveling separately toward the same destination.
