*The Up-Range Pards* by Major Sam S. Hall ("Buckskin Sam"), a frontier adventure serial, is set in the Soledad Mountains of southern New Mexico. Two riders meet unexpectedly on a mountain trail: a rough, plainspoken miner named Nugget Nick and an elegantly dressed young man in fringed buckskin trimmed with gold buttons, later revealed to be Gold Buttons Bill. Upon recognizing each other from past acquaintance, they discover they share a common enemy: El Negro, a renegade American outlaw who leads the "Hyenas of Hard-up," a band terrorizing the region. El Negro was formerly captain of an earlier bandit organization called the Confiscators and murdered Gold Buttons Bill's father. Bill has pursued him across Mexico and now finds his nemesis located nearby. The narrative emphasizes Western frontier dialect, gunfighter protocol, and the revenge plot that drives the protagonist's quest for vengeance.
