Beadle's Dime Library No. 335
Catalog Note *The Blades of Bowie Bar: A Story of the Gold Lands* by Captain H. Holmes, serialized in this March 25, 1885 issue of Beadle's dime novel series. Chapter I, "The Banishment," introduces Dark Dan, a towering gold camp leader in Northern California, who voluntarily accepts banishment alongside Lonely Jack, a newcomer falsely accused of theft. Lashed together and exiled into the mountains by Nugget City's miners' court, Dark Dan vows vengeance. The narrative then jumps five years forward to Carson City, Nevada, where a wealthy, long-haired frontiersman encounters Crested Hawk, a Native American who has lost his fortune gambling at monte tables. The white man, recognizing the Indian from years past, stops him from wagering his final possession—an ornate silver-handled bowie knife—by offering gold pieces instead. The story develops themes of frontier loyalty, survival against odds, and the lawless mining camp culture of 1860s California and Nevada.
