Beadle's Dime Library No. 258
Museum Catalog Entry "The Colorado Bravo; or, The Prisoners of the Death-Vault" by Captain Mark Wilton appears in this October 8, 1883 issue of Beadle & Adams' weekly dime novel (Vol. XX, No. 258). The Western adventure serial follows carpenter Albert Leverett in the Colorado gold town of Red Bullet Bar, who is hired by wealthy mine-owner Edmund Bartlett to construct a secret iron vault beneath his house as protection against road-agent robberies. The vault features reinforced stone walls, cement flooring, and riveted sheet-iron—engineered with extraordinary strength. While Leverett works, he encounters "Foolish Joe," a deformed idiot savant with massive upper body strength whom Bartlett shelters out of gratitude for a life-saving rescue off the California coast. As Leverett completes the painting, Joe mysteriously raises the ladder, trapping the carpenter inside the sealed vault.
