Beadle's New Dime Novels: The Quadroon Spy
*The Quadroon Spy; or, The Ranger's Bride* A frontier adventure by W. J. Hamilton, set in Texas during the era of the Rangers' conflict with Mexico. The narrative opens at a ranger encampment on the prairie, where Major Ned Dimmick and his officers await news from Guy Gaudelet, a young spy of mixed descent who serves the Texan cause. Gaudelet arrives with intelligence that the renegade Englishman Tom Egerton, commanding three hundred men including Mexican lancers, has crossed the Rio and marches toward them with vows to destroy the faithful hacienda of Don Jose la Vega. Gaudelet pleads with Dimmick to protect the estate. The chapter concludes when jaguars attack the camp; Gaudelet's quick horsemanship diverts the beasts from the Rangers, though one kills a ranger's horse before being shot by Long Bill Epps.
