This issue of *Beadle and Adams* features "The Bullet-Proof Sport" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick series. The story opens in the frontier town of Tip Top, where a mysterious well-dressed stranger fires his gold-plated revolvers into the air to announce his arrival. Introducing himself as "Gold Guns" or "the Bullet-proof Sport," he shocks the townspeople by revealing he's been shot at and shows them a flattened bullet that struck him without penetrating his body. When confronted by Ben Crouse, the brutish superintendent of the Honeycomb Mine, the stranger proves his imperviousness to bullets again—Crouse shoots him at close range, but the bullet merely deforms. The stranger disarms Crouse and exposes him as the cowardly first attacker. The two men warn each other of future violence.
