This Beadle and Adams pulp serial installment presents "Deadwood Dick, Jr., in Mexico; or, The Girl Prisoner of the Madhouse," by Edward L. Wheeler. Set in Mexico City, the story follows protagonist Deadwood Dick, Jr., and his companion Pete Parrot (accompanied by a talking parrot named Polly) as they arrive by train. At a saloon, an American bartender named Tamarack warns Dick of two men—Fernando Remolon and Diego Soslayo—plotting against him. After purchasing Mexican disguises, Dick and Pete are falsely accused of shooting a beggar. A bushy-whiskered man frames them for murder, causing a crowd and police officer to pursue them. They flee through narrow streets but become cornered against a dead-end wall with an angry mob closing in, forcing them to seek escape through nearby houses.
