Five Detective Novels, Vol. 1, No. 1, November 1949 This inaugural issue features five complete detective novels: "The Murder Bridge" by George Harmon Coxe, in which detective John McCann investigates a slain man and an escaped killer connected to a half-million dollars, complicated by a shadow from the past; "Too Tough to Die" by George Bruce, starring sleuth Red Lacey, who refuses to let mobster "Mushky" Jenks take the electric chair for a murder he didn't commit; "Murder in Mexico" by Steve Fisher, wherein Paul Orr robs the Foreign Club to finance his marriage to a Hollywood actress; "The Hooded Killer" by Paul Ernst, featuring retired detective Anthony Lance drawn back into service by the mysterious murder of Nicholas James; and "Death on an Ocean Liner" by Richard Sale, where foreign correspondent Craig Mitchell becomes entangled in a smuggling conspiracy aboard ship. The magazine also includes a portrait of Alexander Hamilton by Ray Cummings and a true crime article "The Path of Death" by Simpson M. Ritter.
