This document comprises official U.S. Air Force UFO investigation records from Project 10073, dated January 1961, along with associated UPI news dispatches. The materials record a fireball sighting near Santa Rosa Island, California on January 6, 1961, observed as a "basketball"-shaped object described as "bluish white, like an electric arc." The object appeared to break into several smaller pieces before descending and fading. Air Force investigators concluded it was a meteor breaking up in Earth's atmosphere. The accompanying news reports document widespread public alarm across California, with unconfirmed rumors of fires, crashed satellites, and debris spreading among officials and residents during an approximately one-hour period before the meteor identification was confirmed. Mount Wilson Observatory astronomers attributed the phenomenon to a periodic meteor shower, designated "Draconid." Related meteorite sightings occurred in Oregon and Northern California on consecutive nights.
