Museum Catalog Note This document collection consists of official U.S. Air Force and Australian military investigation records into unidentified flying object sightings in the Boianai area of Papua New Guinea during June-July 1959. The primary account describes observations by a missionary educator and witnesses at a mission station of multiple luminous objects displaying unusual flight characteristics and apparent structural features. The objects reportedly ranged in size (estimated 20-35 feet diameter for the largest), exhibited color changes from dull yellow to white, red, and blue-green, and descended as low as 450-500 feet altitude. Witnesses documented apparent responses to hand signals and torch communications. The investigative evaluation, conducted by Australian intelligence officials in December 1959, assessed the observer as credible and educated, noted prior sightings in the region since November 1958, and proposed satellite and geological reflections as probable explanations for some phenomena.
