The Shadow of Ashlydyat, Vol. III
This volume comprises the second installment of Mrs. Henry Wood's novel *The Shadow of Ashlydyat*, a melodramatic domestic narrative. The narrative follows Maria Godolphin as she faces mounting financial crises and personal disasters. The plot encompasses George Godolphin's financial mismanagement, unpaid creditors pressing Maria for payment (including Mrs. Bond, a linendraper, and the undertaker), and the revelation that George has misappropriated Lord Averil's bonds. Thomas Godolphin, facing potential bankruptcy of the family banking firm, fears George may be in hiding to avoid criminal prosecution. The novel's themes center on financial ruin, family shame, and moral collapse, with chapters bearing titles suggesting melodramatic tension ("A Fiery Trial," "Another Nail in the Coffin," "A Shadow of the Future"). The volume concludes with the dissolution of the banking partnership.
