New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 48
The New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 48 (March 21, 1857) displays the characteristic format of America's leading theatrical and sporting weekly. The masthead features an ornamental engraving depicting waterfront and domestic scenes flanked by classical figures, announcing the publication's broad purview. Below, a wood-engraved scene shows curling players on ice at Montreal, with detailed architectural backgrounds and figures rendered in the dense, narrative style typical of mid-nineteenth-century newsstand illustration. The front page is organized in narrow columns of small type, allowing maximum text density alongside images. Founded to cover theater, minstrelsy, circus, prizefighting, horse racing, and baseball, the Clipper served as the primary picture-news source for American popular entertainment, helping establish visual journalism as a vehicle for following distant events and performers. The paper directly preceded Variety and Billboard as the entertainment industry's essential trade publication.
