New York Clipper
The New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 40 (January 24, 1857) represents the leading weekly chronicle of American popular entertainment. The front page displays an ornate engraved masthead featuring theatrical vignettes—harbor scenes, performers, and urban landmarks—establishing the paper's scope across theater, circus, and sporting life. Below sits a wood-engraved scenic block depicting Prince's Bay, an oyster locality, illustrating the Clipper's pictorial approach to newsmaking. Dense columns of small type fill the remainder, covering subjects ranging from theatrical notices and minstrelsy to prizefighting, racing, and billiards. Priced at four cents, the Clipper served as the primary visual and textual guide for variety performers, spectators, and sports enthusiasts, establishing conventions of illustrated entertainment journalism that would evolve into modern trade publications.
